ao3 rant cont.

Back to profiles. If I click on someone the first thing it shows me beneath their name and icon is a list of their top five fandoms they have written for. Underneath it has recent fics, with the most recent five. Then recent series, with the top five, then recent bookmarks with the top 5.

I hate this page, I never want to see these most recent 5. I want to see all. Also fandoms they've written for is so needless, why is that the top thing?

I just miss the personality of a ffn profile with the person showing a bit of personality before just a list of all their fics with an extra button to get to their favourites.

Not to mention, how much faster scrolling through ffn fics actually are.

Like

I can on average fit two ao3 fics on my screen, that is if they don't have too many tags and notice I have disabled additional tags by default to help out. (Why is there not a button to disable characters and pairings as well?) Fics with a longer description or more characters can easily fill my entire screen.

Okay, what about ffn?

I can easily fit five!!! There's limits to how big the descriptions are allowed to be and all the fic info is efficiently written on two lines so it's rarely more than that. ao3 does allow for a lot more info it can't be denied. I do like how every ffn fic is allowed a custom icon though. Also that publish date is right there.

Don't get me wrong, ao3 is a much better website. I think I always got more comments on ffn though. You get kudos on ao3 but i don't want kudos, I want comments. It's annoying that you can rack up kudos without getting a single comment. One of the fics I show up there. It's got 4 chapters and a single comment but its got 19 kudos. How annoying. That's not even that bad though, like yeah I have a fic with 58 kudos and zero comments. I xposted the same thing on ffn and even though it got way less traffic, I still got two reviews.  The comments i got on ffn were often blunt, sometimes just please update but gosh I liked them.

The only real way to talk to someone on ao3 is to literally comment on a fic and it will always be the author who might respond and comment back. That's it. It's crazy cause ffn has direct messaging and forums. Actual forums where you can talk about fics!!! Or whatever you want.

Ahhh Ao3

I like reading fanfiction and Ao3 is the best site for it, without question. I understand its got a lot of great tools and such and is ideal for searching for fics of all types.

But, y'know, it will never have much community.

One of my favourite things about fanfiction.net was having a favourites list and checking out the favourites list of writers I liked.

I loved how most people tended to have profiles full of text. Sometimes it was notes on their fics and such, sometimes random rambling or pdates, sometimes it was full of jokes or those copy-paste into your profile lines. When you clicked on an author, that's the first thing you saw followed by scrolling down to their stories they've written always in update order by default. And then a single click opens their favourites list. I found so many gems through that method.

Finding bookmarks on ao3 is nothing like that somehow. Few writers have loads of fics favourited as theirs like five other methods of keeping track of fics somehow. Namely tracking and collections. Why there's so much overlap I have no idea. Collections I still do not fully understand. Why they are so odd I don't know. You can create private collections and make fics unrevealed and it may be possible to add other people's fics to your invisible collection to take it hostage if you wanted.

Why is their no actual variant to ffn communities which were just little collections of fics people shared publicly allowing people to find a bunch of recommended fics. It was strange that you're only allowed one community per person but aside from that at least you could wilffuly connect with others in that tiny way.

The only way to find a collection is to click on a fic that's already in it and then itll show you its in a collection and then you can open that collection to see related fics. It's meant for challenges but people use it for recs and its just so needlessly weird!

Oh well.

Hi

I've been thinking about being more than a lurker. Don't get me wrong, I'm not chatty and I spend a lot of time formulating my words and then never getting round to making actual points but hey, I've got opinions, deep down xD.
